How to build a running shoe rotation

Hear from our Community Specialist, Caitie - on the importance of Shoe Rotation.

Why should I build a running shoe rotation?

For many runners – especially beginners – one pair of running shoes is enough to see them through daily training and short races. However, incorporating a running shoe rotation can help prolong the lifespan of your shoes and optimise performance. Rotate running shoes to ensure that different pairs can recover between runs, offering better support and reducing the risk of injury. Many of HOKA's bestsellers work well as daily workhorses and are versatile enough to cover basic needs. After all, high-performance running shoes are an investment, and purchases should be made after careful consideration.

Saying that, many runners find that gradually building up a running shoe rotation – for example, rotating between 3-4 pairs – helps them get the most out of their training and race-day performance. Studies have shown that building a running shoe rotation and rotating between multiple pairs of shoes can help prevent running-related injuries.

In short, there are many benefits that you may see from building a running shoe rotation:

1. Having different pairs of running shoes for different types of run or training can help you tailor your experience and get the most out of your runs.

2. Switching between shoes can give the midsoles time to recover inbetween runs, thereby ensuring you're getting the best running experience every time.

3. Running in different shoes can help strengthen different leg muscles and reduce the risk of injury by avoiding repetitively overloading any one muscle, tendon or ligament.

Start with one daily all-rounder, and then slowly add more pairs as you need - and can afford. This will also give you the time to understand what you need from your running shoes and ensure that every shoe you add to your wardrobe really brings value.

Do I need a running shoe rotation?

As said above, not every runner needs to invest in multiple pairs of running shoes, and the answer to 'how many running shoes do I need?' depends on your personal running routines and goals. Generally, if you're running at least 3-4 times a week then a minimum 2 pairs to switch between is recommended. If you're running less than this or if running is only a small part of your fitness regime, then one pair may well suffice.
